Pros of a Roof Top Tent?

Roof Top Tents are generally very compact and fold out to a double size bed. Most of the people we sell this model tent to are travellers who don’t want to tow a camper trailer so they mount the tent on top of their vehicle.

The advantages of this type of tent is that they pack up out of the way, meaning you keep all your storage space in the vehicle free for your camping gear. They also are up off the ground which means you don’t have to worry about finding a nice clean piece of ground to set up tent up on which can save time. In fact many people who buy roof top tents are travelling to North Australia and want a tent that’s off the ground so they don’t have to worry about crocodiles.

Roof Top Tents have the mattress included inside the tent which means you can pack them up with your bedding inside. This means you can save a lot of time when setting up camp as when the tent is set up it’s pretty much done.

The draw backs of roof top tents include having to go up and down a ladder in the middle of the night to go to the toilet which some people find a turn off and the set up time can be a little long on some brands. We’ve found by mounting the roof top tent correctly the set up time can be reduced so this isn’t a big problem. It also helps to have your vehicle set up correctly as the hardest part of setting up and packing up your roof tent is that you have to get up on your vehicle to do it. Fitting good side steps to your 4WD makes getting access to the tent much easier and will ease any frustration with setting and packing up.

A good quality travel cover is also important to keep dust and water out of your bedding in the tent, so make sure to select a model that has a good one.

Roof top tents need to be set up on a set of cross bars or a full roof rack if you have one, but generally they are quite easy to mount. Its also great to fit a 4×4 awning to your vehicle as this will act as a shade during the day while you’re stopped for lunch and also at night it makes a more complete camp site.

Most roof top tents also have an optional awning room at the base of the tent which covers in the ladder area and also gives people a private area where they can get changed while standing up.

These tents are also used in many other applications including on boat trailers and over ute trays so they are a very universal product. 1. Could you also comment on the weight of roof top tents. I am advised that the legal dynamic roof load on my D22 Navara with canopy is only 60kg. So with a roof rack plus roof top tent nothing else can go uo there.

    • Hi Paul, Weight is a bit of an issue with some vehicles. With a rating of 60kgs you’d be limited to the tent (ours is 52kgs) and a couple of cross bars. Some people get concerned with their body weight inside the tent as its adds another 150 to 200kgs for a couple. The important thing to note, is that is static weight when the vehicle is stopped and not really an issue if your cross bars are mounted over the strong vehicle pillars, the main concern is the weight on the roof when the vehicle is in operation on and offroad. Hope this makes sense.
